2D structure of Vinblastine
Vinca alkaloids are drugs used to treat a variety of cancers, they work by inhibiting microtubule assembly, hence inhibiting cell division. They produce a number of predictive side effiects as a result of their antimitotic effects. Their major side effects include:
- Hair loss
- Oral mucositis
- Neurotoxicity manifesting as peripheral neuropathy; if injected intrathecally they cause an often fatal neurological disorder. More common and problematic with vincristine.
- Myelosuppression, which is less common and problematic with vincristine.
- Injection site reactions like skin sloughing, necrosis and rashes
