The thyroid gland is a gland that hangs on the trachea (wind pipe) and secretes thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine [T3] and thyroxine [T4]) from the follicular cells in response to a message from the pituitary gland, in the form of thyroid-stimulating hormone. Thyroid hormone production involves the extraction of iodine from the bloodstream, along with the amino acid tyrosine. It also produces calcitonin from its parafollicular cells, which reduces osteoclast activity, thereby reducing blood calcium levels.
