Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a particularly debilitating form of premenstrual disorder that is characterized by severe psychiatric and physical symptoms such as:

  • Low mood, including sadness or crying
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Foul mood including irritability and anger
  • Powerful food cravings
  • Inattention
  • Fatigue
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Swelling or bloating
  • Sleep disturbances

and in particularly severe cases:

  • Hallucinations, delusions, violence, suicidal thoughts or behaviour and mania.
