Physical dependence is a state in which one’s body has become so used to a particular substance that it sort of assumes that the substance is always going to be there, consequently, whenever a dependent individual stops taking said substance they will develop a constellation of symptoms known as a withdrawal syndrome

Physical dependence does not imply addiction, although addiction does often involve some degree of physical dependence.
