Obesity is a condition that is usually defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. It is associated with an increased risk of the following conditions:

  • Cardiovascular disease (heart disease), including cor pulmonale (a cause of heart failure), hypertensionischaemic heart disease (IHD) and pulmonary hyerptension
  • Depression
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Increased frequency of lung infections like pneumonia
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Stroke
  • Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM)
