The major source for this article's information is the Medscape Reference entry on it.

Migraines are a condition characterized by severe or throbbing headaches, along with other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, sound, smell or touch and visual disturbances (that is, seeing things differently from the way they actually are). The headaches are usually limited to one side of the head.

Its cause is unknown, but genetic and dietary components are suspected to contribute in at least some cases.

It was once believed to be a vascular condition, that is, a condition caused by disturbances in blood flow to the head, but now it is believed that both vascular and brain-derived factors contribute to the condition.
