Metabolism is the pharmacokinetic process by which the body converts a drug or poison into something the body is better equipped at disposing of, most often due to the superior water-solubility of said by-product (which is called a metabolite), when compared to the drug/poison. These metabolites may be pharmacologically active (that is, act as a drug) in its own rights, these metabolites are called active metabolites. See a substance must be water soluble in order for the body to excrete it in the urine and bile (which in turn empties into one's faeces). Usually the process of metabolism is catalysed by enzymes (metabolizing enzymes), especially the P450 family of liver enzymes
