The metabolic syndrome is a condition characterized by a few anomalies that together increase one's risk for developing type II diabetes mellitus, heart disease and stroke. These anomalies include: increased blood pressure, a high blood sugar level, excess body fat around the waist (also known as a pot belly or beer belly) and abnormal cholesterol levels.
