The active medical suppression of the immune response.
Immunosuppression involves an act that reduces the activation or efficacy of the immune system. Some portions of the immune system itself have immuno-suppressive effects on other parts of the immune system, and immunosuppression may occur as an adverse reaction to treatment of other conditions.

Immunosuppression is an artificial state in which immune system's function is suppressed; it is usually as part of a medical procedure or treatment. Usually it is deliberately induced by medications (e.g., for organ transplantation to prevent rejection), although several disease states can also induce immunodeficiency, which is similar by caused by a disease state or congenital defect.
