The immune system is a system of structures and processes that protect organisms, including humans, against disease, especially infectious disease and malignancy. There are several subdivisions within the immune system, which work together to protect the host organism from disease. The two most significant subdivisions are that of the innate and adaptive immune system. The former provides a constant fast-acting non-adaptive defence barrier against invaders whereas the latter provides a slower, more powerful and constantly-adapting defence (that is, it is constantly learning about the invader, figuring out what works and what does not work and cells of this system can store memories about past invaders for decades, or even a lifetime) against invaders.
