IUPAC names are systematic chemical names for chemical compounds who's format is set forth by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry that gives a significant degree of information about the compound in question. They are often long and difficult to understand for those without chemistry training.
For example, for imatinib the IUPAC name is: N-(4-methyl-3-{[4-(pyridin-3-yl)pyrimidin-2-yl]amino}phenyl)-4-[(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]benzamide.
