Hypothyroidism means an underactive thyroid gland, leading to weight gain, depression, hair loss, puffy face, constipation, problems with concentration, stunted growth, reduced energy levels, etc. Refer to the external links for additional details. The most common causes are iodine deficiency, lithium treatment and an immune system-mediated destruction of the thyroid gland called Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
