Gram-staining is a technique for differentiating bacterial organisms into two large groups: gram-negative and gram-positive. The method involves staining the bacteria using crystal violet dye, which is retained by the peptidoglycan cell wall of gram-positive organisms, hence giving the organism a violet colour. Gram-negative bacteria are then identified using a counterstain.
