Extracellular is quite literally the opposite phrase to intracellular in that it refers to outside of a cell or cells. For example, extracellular bacteria are bacteria that live outside the host organism's cells, as opposed to intracellular bacteria like Mycobacterium tuberculosis which reside within cells.
