Down syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It is associated with a high rate of miscarriage, along with termination by the mother during pregnancy, infections and heart problems soon after birth leading potentially to an early death, characteristic craniofacial defects, a lower IQ, growth delays and an Alzheimer disease-like dementia during the fourth or fifth decades of life.
