Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a disease state characterized by the progressive and irreversible destruction of the alveoli of the lungs. There are three major varieties that are in the common tongue: chronic bronchitis, chronic asthma and emphysema. It is most commonly the result of tobacco smoke exposure, although asbestos exposure can also cause it.
