Amisulpride is a benzamide atypical antipsychotic that unlike other atypicals possesses minimal affinity towards the 5-HT2A receptors, rather it serves as an antagonist at the D2 and D3 receptors that seems to be selective for these receptors when they are found in the mesolimbic pathway of the brain (which is the pathway that is over active in schizophrenia), but not the nigrostriatal pathway (which is implicated in the movement disorders caused by typical agents). It is primarily used to treat schizophrenia, although in Italy it is also used to treat dysthymia (mild yet persistent depression).
